Review - Goddess With A Blade by Lauren Dane

Title: Goddess With a Blade
Author: Lauren Dane
Publisher: Carina Press
Publication Date: June 2011
Format: e-book
Genre: Paranormal Romance

How I Got It: I purchased it

Summary:
Armed with a blessed blade and blood from a goddess, Rowan Summerwaite’s got a divine mission. Embodying a Vampire’s worst nightmare is a big job, but someone’s got to do it.

Freshly returned from a political firestorm that erupted after she’d executed the last Scion, Rowan hopes for a period of peace and quiet with the new replacement.

But before long, human women are being found in and around Las Vegas and it’s clear to her the killer is a Vampire. Clive Stewart rules his Vampires with an iron fist in the wake of a spectacular failure on the part of his predecessor. He doesn’t make the mistake of underestimating The Hunter. He knows she’s a predator just like him so he agrees to help her investigation. Within limits.

But nothing between Clive and Rowan stays within the lines and before long, things are tangled and dangerous both personally and professionally

Review:
I originally picked up Goddess With a Blade because Lauren Dane had been tweeting quotes from the book and I thought they were very funny.  It was my first book by Dane, so I'm not sure how it compares to the rest of her work, but this one didn't quite work for me.

There was humor, hotness, and action, but... I just found it lacking.  I understand that Clive and Rowan's relationship needs to move fast because these two are pretty much diametrically opposed to each other, but still, I think I got whiplash.  And the rest of the story pretty much barreled along in the same manner.  Dane has created a detailed and complex world, there are good characters, and some great ideas but I just felt that I needed a little bit more time - time that the story wasn't giving me.  I also got pretty irritated with Rowan's friend Jack.  His on again off again girlfriend is one of the killer's victims.  At first she's his sometimes girlfriend then she's suddenly the love of his life and he becomes a complete ass.  I just didn't like how Jack's love seemed to grow the longer the girlfriend was missing, it confused me at first but then I just rolled with it.  And then there was the way the story ended.  Sometimes leaving a few things up in the air is a great way to end a book.  Not this one - I really wanted a concrete HEA.

If this becomes a series and the characters get fleshed out more and the stories slow down just a bit then I might change my overall opinion.  But right now, meh.

Verdict:
I wanted to like this book but the story moved too quickly, it seemed things were glossed over or left out making Goddess With a Blade seem lacking in a way.  I liked the world Dane created and her humor was great but this one just didn't entertain as much as I would have liked.  I'm giving it 3 stars because while I liked parts and think a sequel would be worth reading but maybe not buying.  Basically, I would recommend trying this one out from the library.

Nice review Jennifer, I'm not sure if I am going to read the book, though it has been advertised in blogland a lot.

@ Aurian - I'd read so many good things about it, but it just wasn't for me.
